Peshawar Zalmi will enter the 2018 edition of the Pakistan Super League after they defeated the Quetta Gladiators in the final of the second season in a one-sided encounter. There will be a sixth team in the next edition of PSL.
The PSL chief Najam Sethi has named five regions from where a sixth team from Multan. Faisalabad, Dera Murad Jamali, FATA and Hyderabad were the other options that the PCB had for the sixth side.
With a sixth team is added, the number of games in the group stages of the tournament are expected to go up from 20 to 30 before the playoffs will see an addition of four more matches.
More details on the third season and the Pakistan Super League schedule will be available closer to the season. However what is known for now is that the defending PSL champions Peshawar Zalmi want some games of the PSL 2018 to be played in Peshawar.
This comes after the PSL chairman Najam Sethi announced that they will look to host eight games in Pakistan during the third edition that will be held in the early part of 2018.
According to latest reports, Sethi has indicated that four PSL 2018 games could be played in Karachi, while six might be played in Lahore. The PSL schedule will be released closer to the start of the competition.
Speaking to the media, the Peshawar Zalmi owner Javed Afridi said of the third edition of the PSL: “After the success of PSL final in Lahore, we, the Peshawar Zalmi, demand to play PSL 3 matches in (the) home of champions and enjoy Zalmi’s hospitality.”
Interestingly, the franchise is yet to send in a formal request to the PCB to get the games to be hosted in Peshawar which they would after the owner, Afridi, has had a talk with the PCB. Once that is done, they will send in the request. Peshawar Zalmi spokesperson also revealed that all of their overseas players have agreed to play in Pakistan as well.
The spokesperson added: “Peshawar Zalmi is ready to play their part in hosting matches of PSL3 in Peshawar and is hopeful that KP government will provide all facilities and (make necessary) arrangements for the successful hosting of PSL games in Peshawar.”
While the PSL format is expected to remain the same, the number of games, which till the previous edition of the Pakistan Super League was 24, will go up to 34 for the third season of the PSL. Eight of these games, including probably the PSL 2018 final will be played in Pakistan, according to the PCB. The PSL schedule for the 2018 edition will be released at a later date.
The second edition of the Pakistan Super League began from February 9 in Dubai. Matches were played in Sharjah and Dubai with the PSL 2017 final played in Lahore. There was a good demand for PSL tickets through the league stages of the tournament before it touched crescendo when the final came to Lahore.
