TAG Heuer a Swiss manufacturing company became the first Swiss watchmaker to offer a “smartwatch” to customers that combines Swiss design with Android OS in it. At its press event Monday, TAG took the wraps off its new connected smartwatch, the TAG Heuer Connected. The Tag Heuer Connected lets watch wearers connect to the internet, stream music and run apps via Google’s Android Wear platform, which includes favourites such as Google Fit and Google Maps.
The TAG Heuer Connected Watch, an alliance between the Swiss watchmaking and the Silicon Valley technologies Intel Inside and Android Wear, is a luxury watch that benefits from over 150 years of Swiss expertise, savoir-faire and heritage as cultivated by TAG Heuer, a watch manufacture based in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the cradle of Swiss watchmaking in the middle of Alpine pastures and mountains.
Inspired by the company’s Carrera watch, the Connected is made of grade 2 titanium and comes in a total of seven colors. Unfortunately, the 46mm Tag Heuer Connected is not as high resolution as some of its cheaper rivals, which is disappointing from such a top-end watch. It comes with a 1.5-inch circular LTPS LCD scratch-resistant sapphire crystal display with a resolution of 360 x 360 and a pixel density of 240ppi. It’s 12.8mm thick, 46mm in diameter and also comes with a rating of IP67 for water resistance. There will be a number of useful watchfaces on the Connected as well, and you can customize each one with different information such as weather, step count or calorie count.
It sports a 410mAh battery which TAG says will get users 25 hours of use at a minimum. Additional specs include a 1.6GHz dual-core Intel processor, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of on-board storage.
Co-developed with Google and Intel, the “Tag Heuer Connected” will cost around 1,60,000 PKR or 1,500 USD. One thousand units are immediately available in 15 stores across the United States, with Britain, Germany, and Japan following in the coming days. TAG Heuer Connected is not yet available in Pakistan but you should expect it in next four to five months and you can then the TAG Heuer Connected from online retailers.
The Connected will compete in part against Apple Inc’s Apple Watch, which has breathed life into the smartwatch category. With prices of US$350 to US$17,000 it competes with some traditional luxury timepieces.
